About me and my practice
Traditionally counsellors dont share a lot of personal information. This is to prevent counsellors talking about themselves all the time and taking up the clients time. We are only human, after all.
I think it is safe to say I have had an interesting life, Ive learned a lot and in the main I have enjoyed it. Im nearly half a century old and Ive done all the traditional things that society expects and a lot of things that are outside the norm.
I like myself and more importantly, in this context, I know myself. This is very important in a counsellor. I need to know myself so I can put myself to one side and sit comfortably with you, giving you my full attention.
I work using the Person Centred Approach developed by Carl Rogers. You can look that up on the internet for a full explanation of what it means.
For me it is a beautiful way of working. It creates all the conditions for personal growth and development.
The counselling relationship becomes the place for you to tackle anything you need to and while you work through the things that are bothering you
I will be using my skills to make you feel safe and valued. I will encourage your internal locus of evaluation which, in human, means I will be encouraging you to trust yourself, to value yourself and to judge yourself for yourself. Not from a harsh place but with empathy and understanding.
I have experienced the transformation of working this way. If you are looking for a long term fix which you have created for yourself then Person Centred counselling could be for you.
Experience
I came to counselling a bit later in life. I qualified 8 years ago which gives me almost 10 years of experience.
This is because student counsellors have to gain practice hours before they can qualify. These placements in counselling agencies, normally charities, are the key to gaining experience before we are let loose on the public.
My placements.
3 months at Turning Point an addiction support charity. I liked my work here unfortunately their contract with the local council came to an end and the new agency who got the contract did not seem very principled.
Nelson Trust a residential rehabilitation unit for drug and alcohol addiction. This was an amazing place to work. I learned so much from my clients I am forever grateful.
Gloucester Womens Centre. I moved from Nelson Trust to their sister organisation. Again an amazing place to work.
During this same time period I had a placement with Place2be working in a school with primary aged children.
Having an adult and a child placement at the same time was very powerful. I could see the childhood my adults had come from and the adulthood that was potentially facing my children.
After I qualified I continued to volunteer with the agencies until 2019 when I started my private practice.
I now work from my home office and predominantly online.
I have continued to educate myself. I dont have a speciality. Person Centred Counselling doesnt work that way.
I am happy to work with anyone who would like to work with me.
I am able to work with anyone who would like to work with me, whatever your presenting issue, diagnosis or problem.
This is because the focus of my work is you and you are not the problem.

Additional Information
I might not seem like the right counsellor for you and that is ok. The most important thing is that you choose the counsellor that is right for you. Trust your instincts and remember that no counsellor can guarantee you results. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
